Western Australia's Small Business Commissioner

In December 2011, the Western Australian Government appointed the State's first Small Business Commissioner, as head of the Small Business Development Corporation.

The Commissioner plays a pivotal role in overseeing the new Alternative Dispute Resolution service, receiving and investigating complaints about unfair market practices affecting small business, and providing assistance in resolving those complaints.

Through a process of advice, guidance and mediation, the Alternative Dispute Resolution service is a low-cost, convenient way of resolving business disputes, reducing the need to go to court.

The service is easy to access, affordable and can assist in resolving disputes quickly, letting you get back to business sooner.

How the Alternative Dispute Resolution service works

At the Small Business Development Corporation we understand how disputes can disrupt your business. Through the Alternative Dispute Resolution service we offer:

• Free information, guidance and advice from experienced advisors;
• Free information on your rights and responsibilities;
• Assistance to help you negotiate a workable outcome with the other party;
• Subsidised access to an independent, confidential mediator, where appropriate.

The Alternative Dispute Resolution service is available to any Western Australian small business involved in a business-to-business or business-to-government dispute with special arrangements for disputes concerning retail lease agreements.
