Retail Trading Hours in Western Australia

The Retail Trading Hours Act 1987 applies to retail shops in Western Australia south of the 26th parallel. It sets out the trading hours and rules covering various categories of retail outlets. Trading hours of restaurants, cafes and takeaway food shops are not covered by the Act.

Sunday trading

2012 laws gave general retail shops in the Perth metropolitan area the right to open their doors on Sunday between 11am and 5pm.

  • General retail shops in the metropolitan area can trade on public holidays between 11am to 5pm, with the exception of Good Friday, Christmas Day and ANZAC Day, when they will remain closed.
  • The changes applied from 26 August 2012.
  • The decision to open on Sundays will remain the choice of the individual retailer and businesses will need to look at their own situation to make that decision.
  • Traders should note that the Commercial Tenancy (Retail Shops) Agreements Act 1985 protects retail tenants from being forced to open on Sundays. These same laws ensure retail shop tenants covered by the Commercial Tenancy (Retail Shops) Agreements Act 1985 can only be charged the landlord's operating expenses for Sundays, if they open on Sundays.
